DATABASES

Building Block Search-Eric/CSA
My search query for my blog is, ‘What is films influence on culture change?’
Searching using in Eric/CSA
S1 (movies or film) =7799
S2 (influence or effect) =84856
S3 (culture or belief) =50737
S1 + S2 + S3 = 62

The best part of this database is now I can explore the choices. Journals, Peer-Reviewed Journals, Conferences and Books. Hard to believe that from seemingly overwhelming individual results the combination of the search terms, makes looking for my answers much more manageable .

Successive Fractions Search-WorldCat
Using the database WorldCat accessed through the Texas Woman’s University here is my search for “What are films influence on culture change.” I begin with Specific Facet First
Facet 1 Film* =1,521,623
Facet 2 Influence* =339,852
Facet 3 Attitude* and Change* = 16,608

The combining of the facets into a successive fraction search I receive 2 good hits. Wonderful.

Citation Pearl Growing- Search-Project Muse
Started with D.W. Griffith’s “The Birth of a Nation”, a controversial film on the attitudes and the reasoning behind them, to illustrate how film can change culture.
I received 4 results in Project Muse using the limiter of Article Title, the best being:

McEwan, Paul.Racist Film: Teaching The Birth of a NationCinema Journal - 47, Number 1, Fall 2007, pp. 98-101 – Article

Adding ‘influence and culture’, and changing the parameters to include “All Fields w/text”, I have enlarged the search to 94 hits relevant to my topic.
All these good hits are now easier to sort through.

Browsing Search-LexisNexis

My last search for the database competency is a browsing search. Using the LexisNexis database I click on the ‘Power Search” tab on the screen. Then I proceed to fill in my search question.
Hitting the radio button to select Natural language I proceed with “films or movies and effect or influence on cultural change.”

My results are 19 hits, which I can now further narrow down by choosing any one of the result groups on the left. Another great asset along with a choice of great results
